Last week, Selena Gomez was in the eye of the media (and the Internet) after saying she was leaving social media. This pop girl seemed to be all fed up with Instagram and all the news regarding the conflict in the Middle East, especially the current occupation and bombing of Israel over Palestine. Sel first posted a story on her Insta profile saying “I wish I could change the world. But a post won’t.”
Shortly after that, the “Same Old Love” hitmaker posted another story, which was much clearer and straight to the point. She said: “I’m taking a break and deleting my Instagram. I’m done. I do not support any of what’s going on.” As a result, she started receiving tons of backlash on social media, especially X and Instagram. The reason? Some considered she was assuming the wrong position and thought she made the Palestinian conflict “about herself.”
Fast-forward to now: Selena took no breaks from the Internet, as people have been able to see her liking and commenting on recent posts of other artists, such as R&B princess SZA. Despite this, her beauty brand, “Rare Beauty,” announced it would be making donations to give medical relief and resources to the children of Gaza in the Palestinian region.
With this, Selena Gomez shuts down all these haters and Internet trolls who judge her based on her choice to leave Instagram (even if she actually didn’t do it!). Also, she makes a major move by helping those people affected in the conflict. It’s clear that, while mental health on social media is a priority for Sel, she still took real action!
