Carice van Houten, who portrayed Melisandre in the hit series ‘Game of Thrones‘, was detained by the Dutch authorities in The Hague, Netherlands a few days ago. The actress is also an environmental activist and she was arrested for participating in a climate protest.
The protest was organized by the global environmental movement Extinction Rebellion which is recognized for bringing awareness about climate change through non-violent actions. Although the group has organized several events all around Europe, this is the first time a person of this caliber is arrested for participating in one of their protests.
On May 27, a large group of people gathered in The Hague, Netherlands to bring awareness about the rapid deterioration of our planet due to the consequences of global warming, more specifically the government’s inaction in regard to fossil fuels. As a result, more than 1,500 protesters, including Carice van Houten, were arrested by the Dutch police.
On that same day, several images started circulating online which showed how a peaceful protest escalated into a violent encounter with local police, which attacked the protesters with tear gas and water cannons. After the news broke, several fans of the series expressed their support for the actress on social media and praised her activism.
