The highly anticipated coronation of the King Charles III, which is set to be held on May 6th, is still generating controversy due to the non-attendance of his younger son, Prince Harry, and his son’s wife, Meghan Markle. Though a source from the Buckingham Palace announced that they would be present, a close source assured to the British newsletters that no invitation has been forwarded to Harry and his family.
The relationship between the King Charles and Harry has been quite tense for a couple years. Ever since the prince’s departure from the UK in 2020 after announcing that he and his wife would be stepping down as Senior Royal Family members, meaning that they will not participate in Royal events and activities, they have not interacted much, according to reports.
After that, they also conceded an infamous interview with Oprah Winfrey where they revealed they left due to the royal family’s mistreatment of them, and hinting racism towards Meghan and her afro American background. Harry, following the steps of his wife, released a book in January 2023 where he revealed that his relationship with his brother, Prince William, and his father, is severely damaged.
New reports claim that the prince Harry would be seeking a better relationship with his family, heal past wounds, and even attend the King’s coronation. Charles is known for having his family’s best interest in consideration, and is willing to forgive past actions.
This would also benefit his public image, having a coronation ceremony while his family is not present and presumably in bad terms, would not be well received by the general public of the United Kingdom.
Amid the controversy, Royal experts such as Robert Lacey and Sally Bedell have made remarks about the admirable capacity of the Royal Family to reunite for a bigger cause and leave personal matters aside, which was exactly what happened during Queen Elizabeth’s funeral. This example could be an indicator that prince Harry would most likely attend his father’s coronation.
