According to a source close to the family, during his years of study at St Andrew’s University, the heir wanted to go unnoticed, and with the intention of having a normal life as any of his other classmates, despite having enrolled as William Wales, everyone addressed him as “Steve“.
This made his stay at the university more pleasant, however, it was not the only nickname he got in his time at the university, according to ‘The Independent’, who said that at that time, Kate Middleton called her now husband “Big Willy“. It has not been confirmed if the same code word is still used to refer to the future monarch.
