Pope Francis‘ death was announced on Monday morning by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo. Thousands of followers are mourning the death of the Pontiff and they are all asking, what will happen next?
According to the “Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis,” or the “Rite of Burial for Roman Pontiffs,” the camerlengo will preside over the certification of Francis’ death and the laying of his body in a coffin on Monday evening. The piece of jewelry, named the Fisherman’s Ring, is destroyed after a pope’s death, and a new one is forged for the Church’s next leader.
The Pope is to be transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica for a public viewing as early as Wednesday morning, according to the Holy See Press Office. The Pope’s funeral will be simpler and will take place four to six days after his death at St Peter’s Square.
The next day after his death, NBC reported that the College of Cardinals will gather to set plans for the pope’s funeral and will follow the nine-day mourning period, known as Novemdiales.
