LE SSERAFIM’s upcoming fifth mini-album, “HOT,” is hitting a rough patch after KBS deemed several songs unsuitable for broadcast on March 5. Tracks like “Ash,” “Born Fire,” “Come Over,”and “So Cynical (Badum)” raised concerns over dark or self-harm themes, causing the network to reject the tracks. It seems like the quintet won’t be able to promote these songs on KBS shows, including Music Bank, unless the lyrics are revised and re-submitted.

But banning songs due to having “controversial themes” is nothing new in K-pop. However, many fans believe KBS is overly strict, potentially making it harder for creative expressions. Meanwhile, KBS says that songs that are considered unsuitable to be performed to the public can be revised and re-submitted. As a result, agencies and K-pop idols often change the “controversial” lyrics to comply with the broadcaster.

Despite the setback, HOT will drop on March 14, featuring member Yunjin’s writing credits on the title track “HOT,” along with “So Cynical (Badum)” and “Ash.” FEARNOTs—the group’s fanbase—remain optimistic, supporting  LE SSERAFIM’s new era. Regardless of KBS restrictions, the group’s comeback will for sure be another dazzling chapter in the quintet’s story!
