The musical juggernaut, Wicked, has been banned in Kuwait just days before its planned release. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the movie features a prominent LGBTQ+ cast, including Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, and Bowen Yang. The ban choice sparked speculation about the reasoning behind the sudden decision, which hints at its LGBTQ+ actors.
According to a report from Variety, the film was removed from theater listings in Kuwait ahead of its December 5 premiere. And while officials have not provided an official explanation, local media suggest the ban may be linked to an LGBTQ+ character or the inclusion of openly queer cast members such as Erivo, Bailey, and Yang. Similarly, Kuwait’s government has previously blocked films deemed inconsistent with the country’s cultural and societal norms, such as Barbie in 2023.
The decision comes despite Wicked achieving extraordinary success around the globe. The musical adaptation has already made history, earning $263.1 million in U.S. ticket sales and $359.2 million globally. This whopping box office performance solidifies Wicked as the highest-grossing Broadway-to-film adaptation of all time, a testament to its star power and timeless bops.
