Sonic the Hedgehog has officially catapulted his way past the $1 billion benchmark at the worldwide box office, thanks to the franchise’s third movie smashing tickets. The first two films, launched in February 2020 and April 2022, grossed a combined $725.2 million. Then, Sonic 3 raced onto screens on December 20 (in the United States) and December 25 (internationally), adding $312 million more for a running total of over $1.037 billion.
Besides tickets, the franchise has scored major wins in home entertainment, raking in $181 million from rentals and purchases of the first two films. Last April, Paramount+ premiered the Knuckles spinoff series, pulling in 11 million viewing hours in its first 28 days. Critics and fans are equally loving Sonic 3, which has an 86% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 96% Hot Popcornmeter score.
This latest installment has Jim Carrey reprising his iconic role as Dr. Robotnik alongside a star-studded cast including Ben Schwartz, Krysten Ritter, and Idris Elba. The animated film opened at No. 1 in the U.S. and quickly raced to $100 million overseas faster than the earlier films. Sonic’s unstoppable speed is here to race through the box office!
