K-pop sensation TWICE has been the center of controversy following the release of Megan Thee Stallion‘s latest single, “Mamushi” (Remix) [feat. TWICE] which features lyrics sung by the group that some fans find, at least, polarizing. TWICE’s contribution to the song is a verse entirely in English, which ignited heated discussions online as internet fans debate the meaning behind the words, suggesting that there is shade towards their direct girl group competitors, BLACKPINK, who they are constantly compared with.
Here are the lyrics in question:
We sold out your closet like we did at MetLife
[…]
We’re the originators, global entertainers
Your favorite girl group sings our song, screaming TWICE”
In response, fans of both artists have rallied to social media either to defend the lyrics as an empowerment statement or criticize this attempt to diminish another successful girl group. Neither TWICE’s label, JYP Entertainment, nor Megan Thee Stallion’s representatives have released an official statement regarding the matter, but the controversy is still rampant across all social media platforms.
Here’s the audio for the song. What do you think? Is this a direct attack towards BLACKPINK?
