Renowned royal expert Robert Hardman recently shared details about Charles‘ first day as King of the United Kingdom, following the death of his mother Elizabeth II, who held the title of Queen for over 65 years.
At the Henley Literary Festival, it was revealed that the book ‘Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story‘, authored by Hardman, recounts in detail the first hours of the late Queen’s son as monarch.
“Everyone who loses a loved one is told to go and have a few days off to sort yourself out and deal with it, but as a monarch, you have to start organizing stuff“, said the author, assuring that upon becoming King, Charles III could not carry out a normal mourning.
Hardman revealed how the royal found out he was king: “He was driving up the estate backroads and someone in the back received a phone call from the switchboard. They handed it to his private secretary who said, ‘Sir, I’m afraid you’re going to have to stop the car’ and handed him the phone” and added, “That is the moment he’s addressed as ‘Your Majesty’ for the first time“.
Quickly Charles arrived at Balmoral to see his mother and almost immediately began to work. One of the first things he did was to call Prince William in tears to tell him the news. Hours later, Charles III traveled to London to address his nation as the new king.
