Through a new Hulu series, ‘In Vogue: The 90s‘, a designer revealed that Princess Diana ‘ripped the corset’ of her iconic Met Gala dress by refusing to wear pink, which, from her perspective, did not flatter her.
John Galliano had become creative director of Dior and revealed, “We went to Kensington Palace and discussed drawings. I was trying to push for pink, but she was not having it. ‘No, not the pink!’ That was real, real fun“, saying it was a rewarding experience.
The designer told the show that as soon as the dress fittings were done and everything was fine, they went to the event and confessed, “I just remember her getting out of the car, I couldn’t believe it. She’d ripped the corset out“. This left everyone present surprised; however, Galliano added, “She felt so liberated. She’d torn the corset out. The dress was much more… sensuous“, accepting that Diana did the right thing.
This was Diana’s only appearance at a Met Gala, and her navy blue silk dress with black lace trim was the sensation of the evening; even the former editor of British Vogue, Edward Enninful, described the evening as the most influential red carpet in the world, due to the presence of the princess.
