While it is true that the British monarchy has deep-rooted customs that are historically repeated, Kate Middleton and Princess Charlotte broke a tradition with a meaningful act at a major royal ceremony.
Mother and daughter looked flawless as they attended the coronation of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey on May 6, 2023; however, one detail that caught a lot of attention was that during the event the Princess of Wales and her daughter did not wear a tiara on their heads as they were expected to do.
Traditionally, close relatives of the monarch would wear a diamond headdress or crown during a coronation ceremony, but the princesses decided to wear a more reserved accessory made of silver ingots, crystals, and silver threads, designed by Jess Collett with Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen.
It was later revealed that the reason Kate Middleton and Princess Charlotte did not wear a diamond tiara as had been done for many decades was because King Charles III wanted more modest celebrations; they went for a more casual style, concluding that the only ones wearing crowns would be the monarchs.
