(G)I-DLE’s Soyeon makes bold statements about feminism and LGBTQ rights

Okay, (G)I-DLE, time to get all eyes! That’s because Soyeon recently sat down with Cosmopolitan Korea and spilled the tea on the societal views she has while creating music. First, she discussed the double standard in the South Korean music industry, expressing that male musicians often talk about sex in their songs. In contrast, female musicians do not have the same pass. She explored this topic in (G)I-DLE’s song “Wife.”

“The freedom of expression as an artist is an important issue. I wanted to talk about the issue with the song ‘Wife.’ Male artists, especially male hip-hop musicians, have many songs that talk about sex. But in Korea, female musicians tend to express themselves more prudently when they sing about sex. But a woman who desires sex isn’t a bad or wrong woman, right? I believe every woman has her own desires and personalityd the song “Wife” which gained attention for various interpretations including sexual innuendos.”

She then continued talking about coming out and sexuality, referring to one of her friend’s experiences. The idol confessed that people should not have to hide who they are, advocating for freedom and confidence. This surely resonated with (G)I-DLE’s LGBTQI fans.

“Recently, a friend of mine came out, but I don’t really care about such things. I just think and say, “If they want to like men or if they want to like women, so what?” I don’t want to hide who I am. I want to be confident about myself as a person and I hope others can be as well.”

And just like that, Soyeon makes another step with another bold statement. The idol and her group have recently been in the middle of controversy due to the meaning of the song “Wife,” and now Soyeon might get many more conservative detractors in South Korea. In contrast, her female and LGBTQI fans will love her even more!
