It’s official! Disney has unveiled the protagonist for the live-action adaptation of “Moana.” Taking on the lead for the movie, we are set to see 17-year-old Catherine Laga‘aia, of Samoan heritage. The filming is kicking off this summer, promising to bring the charm of the animated film into real life.
The announcement was all about proving the company’s dedication to celebrating “the islands, communities, and traditions of Pacific Islanders.” Similarly, the actor shared her excitement to play the role, expressing “Moana” is one of her favorite Disney movies and that she’s ready to represent her community:
“My grandfather comes from Fa‘aala, Palauli, in Savai‘i. And my grandmother is from Leulumoega Tuai on the main island of ‘Upolu in Samoa. I’m honored to have an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me.”
Joining Catherine Laga‘aia on screen will be Dwayne Johnson, who voices “Maui” in the animated movie. The actor, also known as The Rock, is also producing the film in collaboration with Lin-Manuel Miranda, who has also worked on “Hamilton” and “Encanto.”
This live-action adaptation is set to release in July 2026. Similarly, “Moana 2,” the sequel to the animated version, will premiere on November 27, 2024. And just like that, this Disney story grows into a franchise with two more films celebrating the Pacific Islands.
