Timothy Laurence, born into a naval family on March 1, 1955, has been a consistent person by Princess Anne’s side since the first time they met in 1980. Back then, he still served on the royal yacht HMY Britannia, but that was just the start of an extended commitment through significant events. From the passing of Anne’s parents, Prince Philip, and Queen Elizabeth II, to jubilant occasions like King Charles’ coronation, he’s been one to stay with Princess Anne.
He was educated at Sevenoaks School and later at University College, Durham, under a naval scholarship, where he was all about straight As. His career in the Royal Navy was marked by rapid promotions due to his evident leadership and skills.
Then, the Vice-Admiral’s relationship with the royal family began in 1986 when he became an equerry to the Queen, and later as the commanding officer of HMS Boxer and the military assistant to Defence Secretary Malcolm Rifkind.
But surprises don’t end there, as his romance with Princess Anne came to the spotlight in 1989 after personal letters between the pair were leaked. Following Anne’s divorce from Captain Mark Phillips, the couple married in Scotland in 1992. While they never had children of their own, Timothy has proven to be a stellar stepfather to Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, Princess Anne’s children from her previous marriage.
