In Scotland is the Balmoral Castle, considered the official summer vacation home of the British royal family. During her term as sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II used to stay at the property during the months of August and September and receive all her children, grandchildren, and close friends, who during those months were free of commitments.

Even in August 1997, when Princess Diana died in a car accident, Prince William and his younger brother Harry were at Balmoral Castle with Queen Elizabeth II as they were every year, which means that their grandmother was the first family member they had around to support them after hearing the news.

All attention was fixed on the property in September 2022, when Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96 at the legendary Balmoral Castle, becoming the first British monarch to die in Scotland since the Act of Union.
