On May 25th, an event named ‘Celebrating Women‘ was held in Abuja, Nigeria, where the country’s first lady, Stella Obasanjo, gave a speech that was misinterpreted, creating speculation about Meghan Markle, so she later came to the defense of Harry’s wife, denying the false accusations.
In the speech, Stella Obasanjo said, “We are not having the Met Gala…. We don’t accept nakedness in our culture“. She then went on to add, “It is not beautiful at all…. They are mimicking and trying to emulate film stars from America. They don’t know where they come from. Why did Meghan come here, looking for Africa? That is something we have to take home with. We know who we are, and don’t lose who you are“.
After that message, the media outlets assured that Obasanjo directly criticized Meghan’s dress since she and her husband Prince Harry spent a few days visiting Nigeria from May 10 to 12 of the same month.
Following the strong controversy created by the media, the first lady’s office issued a statement explaining, “She meant Meghan appreciates the people we are and hence her coming here, at no point did she say anything about Meghan’s dressing“.
