The popular businesswoman, singer and actress Selena Gomez has won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress for her role in “Emilia Perez”, where she plays one of the main characters. The film has been perceived as the favorite from this edition of the year, getting many accolades and the largest standing ovation, and though the conversation online has been mostly positive, Selena Gomez has been the target of some rather controversial opinions of people questioning her merits to receive the award for Best Actress.
Most of the criticism is based on the fact that all of the four main actresses received the award, yes, thee were four Best Actress winners at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and they are all from the cast of “Emilia Perez”. Considering that Selena Gomez’s role in the film is not the protagonist, but a supporting character, some internet users started questioning if Selena Gomez is just benefiting from the performance of the rest of the cast members, and she was just grouped in with the rest of them. What this type of comment implies is that Gomez received the award due to the overall performance of the four actresses, not her own, and that also implies that her contribution to the film is insignificant, or that she did not deserve the recognition.

When asked about the thought process behind giving four women the award, Greta Gerwig, the president of the jury, she stated that “To separate them would be to undermine the magic of what they did together. Each of them is a standout. They’re transcendent.” The general opinion of the critics is that Gomez did a wonderful job in her rendition of her character, so the controversy regarding her merit remains bases soleli on a part of the public’s opinion.
We’ll have to wait for the movie to be released on Netflix to be able to see it and make conclusions. What do you think?
