The Spanish Monarchy has been under the scrutiny of the public eye and Spanish media outlets because of the several controversies they have gone through in the last couple of months. On top of that, it was reported that Queen Letizia saved the stem cells from their children, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía’s umbilical cords.
King Felipe VI was in charge of revealing this surprising fact of his daughters. The news had mixed critics until the King was able to explain why they kept Leonor and Sofía’s stem cells for so long.
“We have kept the umbilical cord as with Leonor. It is something in which we have a lot of confidence, and we believe in it. I believe that science and medicine are advancing a lot in this field and we have learned a lot about it. Thanks to the precision of Dr Recansens we have been able to extract enough blood to fill two bags and one will go to the public bank and another to a private bank within Europe.”
King Felipe VI revealed that Leonor’s stem cells are stored in a blood bank in Tuscan, Arizona. On the other hand, Infanta Sofía’s stem cells are stored in Europe. Queen Letizia and King Felipe VI wanted to keep them because these kinds of cells can differentiate into any specialized cell, which is the best chance of a successful treatment of a disease.
