The official website of the British Royal Family revealed this overlooked law that has the potential to alter the line of succession of the monarchy, establishing monarchs that we would not expect as they may not be of the same royal lineage or who would not be the rightful descendants.
The website makes it clear that “the order of succession is the sequence of members of the royal family in the order in which they stand in line to the throne“. However, this would not be the only way to ascend to the throne, as there is a higher authority that can ascend to the throne.
This reveals that “it therefore came to be established not only that the sovereign rules through Parliament, but that the succession to the throne can be regulated by Parliament“, assuring that in extreme cases this entity could intervene for the promotion of a president.
University of Sydney associate professor and historian Cindy McCreery explained that Parliament could change the line of succession with immediate effect: “It would really only be in a case of a dire or extreme circumstance, such as that someone had committed a criminal act or was about to commit a criminal act“.
