Francesca Amewudah-Rivers will star in “Romeo & Juliet“ alongside Tom Holland, which is set to open at Duke of York’s Theatre on May 23. Sadly, the West End spectacle is being shaded by some serious online racism. Why? well, Francesca Amewudah-Rivers is getting a hate train online simply for being the chosen one to play Juliet.
Fortunately, the actress is being backed up by some big names in the industry, who are not here for the hate she’s receiving. Her supporters include “No Time to Die” sensation Lashana Lynch and “Enola Holmes” star Susan Wokoma, along with 880 people more! These names just signed a letter calling out the abuse Francesca has faced after being cast in the production.
The letter doesn’t mince with words: it’s going against the “racist and misogynistic abuse” that’s become all too familiar for Black artists, especially black women, crushing it in their careers. It’s a call for the industry to step up and protect starts from this treatment.
Now, as Francesca preps to bring Juliet to life, the message from her peers is crystal clear: We got your back.
The only thing that trumps hate is love; this is for Francesca Amewudah-Rivers https://t.co/pjdTN5NiB9 💜 #juliet
