Recent revelations assured Emilia Clarke‘s legs caused many problems for the ‘Game of Thrones‘ visual effects crew, and despite having dragons, castles, and great scenery as challenges in their productions, the actress’ extremity took first place.
With evolution, there have been many advances in CGI effects, but some small details are still difficult to do, as it was to represent Daenerys Targaryen riding a dragon. The visual effects supervisor, Derek Spears, shared some details in a recent interview with Vulture.
Spears revealed that at one point their dragons scenes “looked a little bit too simple” for that reason; on the 6th and 7th seasons, they used a wooden “buck” in which the actress would sit to create more movement, but this did not make much difference.
The supervisor said, “Dragons aren’t like solid pieces of wood. They move, and when they move, they flex, and their muscles move too. So we had the dragon flying and the muscles moving“, but Emilia Clarke’s legs “didn’t react to any of it. So we had to replace her legs“.
He continued, revealing that “it was a nightmare. Everything else in those sequences was easy compared to trying to get her to sit on top of the stupid dragon with its stupid muscles“. He concluded by saying, “Literally, we had to deform the lower half of her body to make it fit“.
