The sad accident that took the life of Natasha Richardson, the mom in ‘The Parent Trap’

Natasha Richardson was born in 1963 into a family of filmmakers and high-class actors in the city of London. Inspired by the work of most of her family members, she took acting classes at a specialized school and began her career at a very young age.

Her parents’ connections with industry helped accelerate her career and helped her get significant roles in multiple productions, both in film and theater. Nevertheless, her undeniable talent led her to win a Tony Award for her outstanding performance in the musical Cabaret in 1998, the same year the film she is most known for was released: The Parent Trap, a Disney production in which she played the mother of two twins, portrayed by Lindsay Lohan (yes, they are not real twins, Lindsay Lohan played both twins).

In 1994, after divorcing businessman Robert Fox, Natasha Richardson married the famous actor Liam Neeson, with whom she had two sons, Michael and Daniel.

Her acting career had already reached its peak, and she was succeeding in various productions when in 2009 she went on vacation with her husband to the city of Quebec, where they took skiing lessons. During one of her practice sessions, Richardson slipped, fell and hit her head, and although she seemed unharmed, an hour later she began to show symptoms of a serious injury, so she was urgently taken to the nearest hospital.

Soon after, at her husband’s request, Natasha was transferred to Lennox Hill Hospital in New York City, where her two sons were waiting for her, and sadly, her condition deteriorated to brain death.

According to the actor, the couple had made a vow in which they promised that if either of them fell into a coma, the other would have to disconnect them. Although Neeson confesses that it was the most difficult decision and the worst moment of his life, after doctors diagnosed brain death, the actor kept his promise.

During an interview, Liam Neeson shared what went through his mind at that time. “They told me she was brain dead. And looking at this X-ray was like: ‘Wow.’ I approached her and told her that I loved her. I said, ‘Darling, you’re not coming back from this. You’ve hit your head. I don’t know if you can hear me, but that’s what’s happening. And we’re bringing you back to New York. All your family and friends will come.'”

After her death, three of her organs were donated, and are currently keeping three people alive. After a successful acting career and a fairly pleasant personal life, Natasha Richardson passed away on March 18th of 2009 at the age of 45.
