The long-awaited prequel to the enigmatic ‘Wonka‘, despite being very popular, was beaten by ‘Mean Girls‘, which now dominates the UK and Ireland box office and has had a really surprising success since its debut, surpassing all expectations about the musical.
‘Mean Girls’ opened on January 12th, 2024, and has since grossed more than £3.2 million ($4.1 million), according to Comscore figures, far surpassing Warner Bros. ‘Wonka’, which took in £1.6 million at the box office last week.
However, ‘Wonka’ had a successful reign at the box office as it remained in first place for seven consecutive weekends, grossing a total of £58.3 million in the U.K. and Ireland alone, recouping just over half of the film’s $125 million budget.
Both films proved to have marked an entire generation, as the first version of Mean Girls’ was released in 2004, and considering the receptivity it received, we can conclude that it is still popular 20 years later, just like Wonka, which made its debut in 1971, and today its most recent version proves to be an imminent success.
