During 2023, a historic event happened that called into question the stability of the entire entertainment industry, and that is that screenwriters and actors went on strike causing the film industry to separate for more than four months and thus delaying and moving many projects that were already planned, even some were canceled and even though they reached a negotiation for three years. This could leave a mark for the industry since it seems that one of the negotiations talked about artificial intelligence, a problem that would also be recurrent in musicians, who are already preparing to protect themselves from this kind of intelligence.
Hollywood in danger: Musicians could go on strike
We remember that with the advent of technology, many things are changing and human life is becoming simpler. The problem is that this same robotic intelligence can take people’s jobs and not give them enough credit because it is an algorithm, and now musicians want to protect themselves from streaming and of course artificial intelligence protections.
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) and the American Federation of Musicians (AFM), a union that represents musicians in the entertainment business, will start negotiating a new contract on Monday. According to the union, an agreement that more accurately represents the state of streaming media today is what it is pursuing. In addition, the AFM is requesting protection from AI, higher compensation, better working conditions, better health care, and residual payments for streaming material. The AFM claims that because soundtrack musicians receive less residual revenue from streaming content, they make 75% less money.
What do you think about this? Do you think they will be able to reach a good negotiation to avoid having this kind of problems in the future? What do you think is going to happen to Hollywood?
