Sofía Vergara was sued by the family of former drug trafficker Griselda Blanco, where the Barranquilla native plays the woman in a Netflix production to be released this January 25. According to news portal TMZ, the family members of the dangerous drug trafficker from the 70s and 80s do not agree with the production and intend to stop its release.
Blanco’s eldest children, who represent her estate, are suing Sofía Vergara and Netflix, stating that they did not authorize the image and use of their family in this production. One of the drug trafficker’s sons, Michael Corleone, claims that for years he has been interviewed by men who want to capture the story of his life and that of his late mother into production.
He further indicated that the interviews went back from 2009 to 2022. The man indicated that the people who were interviewing him, wanted to offer the book in Hollywood for 2016 and that they offered it to a producer before Netflix.
Then they told him that the platform was interested but that they did not want to make use of any of the details or interviews that Michael had done. What Blanco’s son alleges, is that the series ‘Griselda‘, is based on many of his anecdotes and materials but that he was never paid for that.
They indicate that the platform is using his family history and the plot of the series with the use of his own images and likenesses without his permission, so it would present a violation of rights. It should be noted that Sofía Vergara is the executive producer of the series, so she is also involved in the lawsuit.
So what is the updated lawsuit about this January 20? The series will be officially cancelled?
The family updated today january 20th that, although the lawsuit does not seek to prohibit the representation of their mother (a public figure), they accuse the platform of appropriating the family narrative, using similarities and anecdotes that are exclusive to them.
Likewise, the legal action would reach Sofia Vergara due to her role as executive producer. The Blanco’s are seeking a formal court order to prevent the release of Griselda.
At the moment, neither the court nor the platform have made any pronouncement on the matter, but if they proceed, the series should be cancelled completely, unless an agreement is reached with the family. Check out the trailer of the series down below:
