All of us at some point in our lives have been given a nickname because of a particular situation, a person we resemble or simply because our name is a derivative or abbreviation of it, and even royalty is not spared from these practices, even if they don’t like it.

Apparently, Queen Camilla has a certain nickname in her family, a nickname that her husband, King Charles III does not like at all, much less that it is becoming more and more public. Camilla was nicknamed “Lorraine” by her family, a playful nod to the French word “La Reine,” meaning “Queen.”

According to the Daily Mail:

“She always saw the funny side of him, even if Prince Charles didn’t,” says a friend in royal biographer Robert Hardman’s new book, The Making of a King: The Making of a King: King Charles III and the Modern Monarchy, serialized in the Daily Mail on Monday.

But in a calculated move that changed history, Queen Elizabeth openly endorsed Camilla as queen consort in her Platinum Jubilee speech in February 2022. Regarding Camilla, Buckingham Palace opted to refer to her as “the Queen” rather than “Queen Consort” on King Charles’ coronation day, solidifying her higher position within the monarchy.

“For the rest of the family, sometimes it seems totally surreal. But she has, thank goodness, her own downtime,” Elliot continues. “She’s a wonderful mother and grandmother. She’s very, very hands on. All our children have grown up very much together. It’s almost like one family, so she’s back to being her normal self when she’s with all of us. I mean, she wouldn’t get away with it otherwise! “There’s quite a bit of irreverence: ‘You’re not the Queen to us’, and so on. There’s quite a lot of all that — thank God.”
