Every time a person decides to reveal that they were abused, it is one of the most serious and worrying moments that can happen because sharing something as intimate as a traumatic sexual experience is not something easy, especially when you are a public figure where hundreds or even millions of people will follow your content and what you do.
Mariska Hargitay shares her experience with sexual assault
Recently the famous actress opened her heart by sharing in an essay, a terrible experience of sexual assaults she had and the news has moved everyone. Mariska Hargitay “cut it out” and “removed it from [her] narrative” because she “couldn’t believe it had happened” after the incident, according to her writing. He reveals that, in order to survive, he had to practice deliberate denial.
In the meantime, the actor founded the Joyful Heart Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting other victims of abuse and violence. “To complete the inner work, I was building Joyful Heart on the outside. I guess I also needed to know what mending might entail,” he says. “I remember giving speeches in which I would declare, ‘I am not a survivor.’ I wasn’t lying; it just wasn’t my self-perception.
Survivors who’ve watched the show have told me I’ve helped them and given them strength. But they’re the ones who’ve been a source of strength for me. They’ve experienced darkness and cruelty, an utter disregard for another human being, and they’ve done what they needed to survive. For some, that means making Olivia Benson a big part of their lives-which is an honor beyond measure-for others, it means building a foundation. We’re strong, and we find a way through.- Said the actress.
What are your thoughts on this? Do you think the actress is brave to show that terrible moment?
