Queen Margrethe of Denmark abdicates after more than 50 years and cedes the throne to her son Frederik

Last Sunday, on New Year’s Eve, Queen Margrethe of Denmark issued an announcement in which she informed that she would abdicate after more than 50 years and cede the throne to her son, Crown Prince Frederik. This was a reflection of the future after having undergone back surgery that fortunately went well.

During her speech, the queen mentioned the following: “Next January 14th, 2024, I will leave the position of queen of Denmark. After 52 years of succeeding my beloved father, I feel that the time has come for the next generation“, making it clear that she will give the opportunity to the next in line.

Queen Margrethe also confirmed, “It is becoming more and more difficult; time is running out, and with the ailments increasing, you no longer face the same things as before“, emphasizing that her advanced age limits her ability to carry out many activities that her position demands of her.

Currently, the monarch is 83 years old; she has ruled for 52 years, so Margrethe has become the queen with the longest reign in the history of Denmark. Her popularity in the Danish country is surprising, and in a statement shared on social networks, her wish was made known: “I hope that the new royal couple will be received with the same confidence and affection that I have received“.
