Pope Francis formally allows priests to bless homosexual couples, causing controversy

The Pope Francis continues approaching the same sex marriage discussion with a rather liberal mindset in comparison to previous supreme pontiffs. At this point, the LGBT matters have become the hallmark of his papacy, with most of the changes being related to the matter. The Argentinian’s changes about the LGBTQ matters have been presented mostly as clarifications in the values of the Christianity, benefiting the perception of the queer community among the church goers and believers alike.

Historically, the church has been vocal about their unacceptance of the LGBT lifestyle, condemning it as a sin, and in most cases, tagging queer individuals as ‘sick’ and in need of religious counseling. However, the last decade has been notoriously different, especially during Pope Francis’ period in office. This shift in the status quo has gained the Pope a not-so-favorable image among the most conservative Catholics, some have gone to the extent of questioning His Holiness’ decisions.

Multiple statements coming from the Vatican regarding the matter have been released, the first one came in 2013, which de-demonized the LGBT individuals, later on, another statement ruled that the LGBT community must be welcomed in church. The newest change in the Vatican has just been released, and much to the surprise of the followers, the Pope is now allowing priests to participate in same sex unions not recognized as marriage, and received mayor backlash for his decision.

His Holiness has clarified the difference between sinful and illicit behaviors, mentioning that being gay is still considered sinful, but is not illegal, and that thus, religion can partake as mentors and bless gay individuals if they want to join another person of the same sex in any form of union different than marriage, since the latter is still considered an institution explicitly only if it’s between a male and a female.

It’s also not allowed for priests to use any form of gestures, chants, vests or practices that would indicate that the union between the two same sex people is a marriage.

Do you agree or disagree with the Pope’s statement or are you more conservative?
