Approximately four months ago, one of the most interesting events in recent times in the Hollywood industry happened, and that is that the screenwriters went on strike followed by the actors. Although the screenwriters reached an agreement a few weeks ago, the actors showed different demands that so far have been able to reach an agreement with the studios.
The strike has had many changes for the industry, as the actors raised their voices for better conditions for their work and a very important issue to take into account was artificial intelligence.
Actors’ union sets demands on the use of Artificial Intelligence
At a press conference, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA negotiator, stated that the agreement “allows the industry to move forward, it does not block AI.”
It does, however, provide protection for artists. Their right to consent is guaranteed. Their labor and fair compensation rights are protected, he said.
According to Crabtree-Ireland, an actor should now receive the same compensation for using his digital replica that he would have received for performing the same “amount of work” on stage in real life.
“A digital replica cannot be used to circumvent the hiring and payment of a supporting actor under this contract,” Crabtree-Ireland added.
Undoubtedly we are going through a historic moment in the industry, and artificial intelligence has evolved so much that it has become a real fear for everyone. What do you think about it? Do you think that the demands made by the actors were necessary for the industry? Do you think that in the future there will be more problems with artificial intelligence?
