‘Hate You’ appears as the 7th track from GOLDEN, Jungkook‘s highly anticipated first solo album, which was released just a few minutes ago. This ballad comes right after the sixth track, ‘Please Don’t Change’, an upbeat love song, which confused the fans that were listening to the album in order… why is Jungkook throwing this depressing ballad at us right after giving us a happy and hopeful love testimony in the previous song? Quite unexpected, though that doesn’t make this breakup anthem less enjoyable.
So, what’s Jungkook’s ‘Hate You’ about?
The BTS member dives into the melancholy with this one, which was co-written by the Canadian singer Shawn Mendes. The lyrics of the song reflect on a breakup that the singer is having troubles getting over with, all because the relationship didn’t have a proper closure, and confesses that he still loves his ex-partner.
Trying to overcome the sadness the breakup is giving him, the singer decides to depict his ex as the ‘villain’, just to have a reason to hate them and make the process less hurtful, even though they were not the bad guy.
Here are the official lyrics to this already fan-favorite ballad:
I wish you went behind my back
And told me lies and stuff like that
I wish you kissed someone I know
And did the unforgivable
Maybe hating you’s the only way it doesn’t hurt
So I’m gonna hate you
I’m gonna hate you
Paint you like the villain that you never were
I’m gonna blame you
For things that you don’t do
Hating you’s the only way it doesn’t hurt
We weren’t perfect but we came close
Until I put all of our pain under the microscope
And I still can’t face it
I’m still in love, for what it’s worth
Maybe hating you’s the only way it doesn’t hurt
So I’m gonna hate you
I’m gonna hate you
Paint you like the villain that you never were
I’m gonna blame you
For things that you don’t do
Hating you’s the only way it doesn’t hurt
It’s not the truth
It’s not the cure
But hating you’s the only way it doesn’t hurt
