Jennie, the 27 year old singer and dancer, member of the Kpop global sensation BLACKPINK, has just announced that she will be releasing a new single, which will be a solo song, meaning she will not be singing with her group partners. The song is titled ‘You & Me’, and it has a few peculiarities that fans are not so eager about.
The song was announced via X (Twitter), through the official account of the managing agency of the BLACKPINK group, YG Entertainment.
The announcement is made amid a huge controversy regarding the contract that Jennie has with the agency, as her last contract is set to expire very soon and there is, allegedly, no renewal of her contract being negotiated, which leaves fans wondering about the future of the group without one of its four members, which is aggravated by the rumors of the other members of the group having the same issue with their contracts. Some fans are afraid this might be a ‘cash-grab’ single before Jennie’s official departure, as a last chance to milk her popularity for income.
The other aspect of the song that the fans are bittersweet about is that, this is in fact not a new song, at all. The other three members, Lisa, Rosé and Jisoo, each have released at least two completely new solo songs in the span of the last 3 years, however, Jennie has not released solo music since 2018, it’s been almost five years since her first solo song and the new one is one that has already been performed in front of fan-packed stadiums. Though it was not available in streaming platforms, the fans have had already heard the song in full and have seen it performed live as well, so it’s technically not new.
‘You & Me’ will be available in online music stores and on Spotify on October 6th. Here’s the announcement made by the company.
