Upon its release, Elemental was sort of a rollercoaster for Disney Pixar fans. The film, instead of getting that usual box office gold Pixar movies have, it was actually cataloged as one of Pixar’s biggest screen slip-ups this year. But don’t panic, we are never talking about a bad movie here! Everything changed as soon as the movie hit Disney’s streaming platform, Disney+. “Elemental” blew up with crazy streaming numbers, which balanced out the early impresions people and critics had about the movie in theaters.
So, how about the idea that sparked the creation of the movie? Well, this time “Elemental’s” director and animator, Peter Sohn, spilled the beans on what fueled his mind for the project. Also keep in mind that he is no rookie to maxing movies with Pixar. He even worked on smash hits like “Finding Nemo,” and now he said some details about how Elemental is rooted on his personal story.
Flashback to the 60s: back then, Peter’s family packed up their bags from South Korea and decided to make a new home in New York City. As he was a child, he got introduced to the periodic table elements and pictured them all living together in aparments. And that’s how the idea for Elemental was first conceived, thanks to the periodic table and the vibrant diversity you can find in the Big Apple.
It looks like what once was an “oopsie” for Disney Pixar, now is the Sweetheart for people at home in Disney’s streaming platform.
