Recently, a renowned Warner Bros. screenwriter made a revelation that no one expected, and that is that Leonardo DiCaprio was very close to becoming Enigma, Batman’s enemy in his film ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, however the director opposed it.
The scriptwriter of the superhero franchise David S. Goyer shared in his recent participation in the podcast Happy, Sad, Confused, that the renowned Hollywood actor was able to participate in the praised Batman trilogy by director Christopher Nolan composed of:
‘Batman Begins‘ (2005), ‘The Dark Knight‘ (2008) and ‘The Dark Knight Rises‘ (2012).
By then, it was common for superhero movies to choose the antagonist first and then work on the rest based on it, so it was not a surprise that after the premiere of ‘The Dark Knight’ the head of Warner Bros. said “You have to do Leo (DiCaprio) as the Riddler“.
However, neither the scriptwriter nor the director of these productions agreed with this methodology, so by wanting to focus first on “figuring out what story we want to tell, and what we want to explore thematically with Bruce. Next, let’s think about which villain fits the story“, DiCaprio lost the role of Enigma.
It is finally discovered that Enigma was not the villain chosen for this production. The synopsis says that “it has been eight years since Batman became a fugitive. The harsh Dent Law continues to quell Gotham’s crime, although the arrival of a thief cat and a mysterious masked terrorist will change everything“,
