Horror movies have suffered numerous mishaps along the way when it comes to being considered part of the seventh art. Despite the fact that some films have been heaped with praise by movie critics, almost none of them has achieved an Oscar for Best Picture, except this one
Throughout the 96 Academy Awards ceremonies, a certain pattern has been followed. The drama movies took the lead on being nominated for the biggest award of the night followed up by musicals and comedy movies. However, horror movies have been seen lagging to be nominated and there are only a few cases to be shown worthy for the academy to be honored.
This rare exception was the first horror movie to win an Oscar for Best Picture during the 64th Academy Awards ceremony in 1992. ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ devoured the other nominees with a 5 out of 7 victories being the most awarded movie of the night.
‘The Silence of the Lambs’ won Best Picture, Jonathan Demme won Best Director, Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor as Hannibal Lecter, Jodie Foster won Best Actress and Best Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published because of Thomas Harris’ novel. The movie achieved the milestone of becoming one of the three movies winning the Big 5 nominations along with It Happened One Night (1934) and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975.)
