NewJeans released their highly anticipated mini-album “Get Up” on July 21, 2023. Since then, they have embarked on promotions and have performed most of the song from their latest EP, including smash-hit “Super Shy,” “ETA”, and “Cool With You.” Fortunately, the latest work by the K-pop girl group was well received both domestically and internationally and has gone into earning the group some chart breaking records only BLACKPINK and BTS held.
The group made their debut on the Billboard 200 albums chart with “Get Up,” after an intense chart battle with the Barbie Movie Soundtrack. The EP by NewJeans was able to reach the top spot with 126.5k units sold in the United States. As a result, the group joined their peers BTS and BLACKPINk, and they are now the three K-pop groups to have ever debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
This comes as a surprise, since NewJeans has achieved this milestone only about one year since their debut. Because of this, the group has had a huge boost in popularity since the release of their first song. But this is not all, as NewJeans broke another chart record. According to Billboard, they are now the first and only female K-pop act to debut at the top spot with their very first chart entry.
In addition, the singles that have spawned from the album, “Super Shy,” “ETA”, and “Cool With You.” also made it to the Billboard Hot 100 with each one being ranked at number 48, 81 and 93 respectively. Because of this, they are the first girl group to have three songs in this chart at the same time. Due to this, NewJeans has now joined BTS and are the only two acts to have more than one song in the American ranking at the same time.

People attribute the group’s success to their trendiness and marketing strategies. Their current mini-album draws inspiration from the Y2K (year two thousand) trend, which takes elements from UK garage, club beats and R&B. Moreover, choosing to pre-release each song on the EP and give every track a music video, helped to create a buzz among the public and gave them the idea that all songs were worth listening to.
