Greta Gerwig explained to USA Today that she wanted to end the film with a kind of joke, but that this scene was also a very emotional encounter. She revealed that as a teenager she felt ashamed of her body in a way she could not even describe, feeling that everything had to be hidden and with the help of Margot Robbie as Barbie she wanted to give a sense of security and freedom to women.
