Two of the most anticipated movies of 2023 premiered on the same day, causing the entire internet to do nothing but talk about them and with good reason, as it seems they could be among the favorites for awards due to the great reception of the public, but not everything is as it seems, as Barbie and Oppenheimer have caused protests on social networks in Japan.
Both movies belong to two completely different messages, in one we can see the story of our beloved Barbie entering the real world and dealing with human problems, but in Oppenheimer we see the story of the creation of the nuclear bomb, which directly attacked Japan during the war, now Barbie and Oppenheimer have caused protests in social networks in Japan.
All the controversy increased more, when Barbie’s official account, commented on one of the memes created by fans of this trend, which undoubtedly helped to promote both films in its past release, Barbie’s social networks, commented: “It will be a memorable summer” in an image where the protagonists of Barbie and Oppenheimer were seen, and behind them a huge nuclear ‘mushroom’, caused by an atomic explosion.
“How disrespectful and inconsiderate of Barbie’s official account,” stated a post from Barbie’s official Japanese headquarters, “we take this situation very seriously and demand a proper explanation from the American headquarters of the studios.”
Evidently, the comment made by the American Barbie account was deleted shortly after, but this could not prevent a strong series of protests from erupting on social networks by angry Japanese.
“How is it possible that they dare to laugh at this offensive meme,” related one user from the Asian country, adding, “they should go to the peace memorial park in Hiroshima to learn a little about what was one of the most serious crimes against humanity.”
