Kit Connor, who brought Nick Nelson to life in Netflix’s ‘Heartstopper’, came out as a bisexual man shortly after the release of the first season of the show. However, he recently opened up about this experience in an interview to promote the upcoming second season of the series and revealed that he would have preferred to do it differently.
After playing a bisexual character in the series, fans started to question the British actor’s sexual orientation and even accused him of only accepting the role to get famous or, in other words, queerbaiting. As a result, he released a statement on his official Twitter account to address the controversy and came out as bisexual:
A few days ago, Kit was interviewed by Chris Godfrey and he spoke at length about the pressure of fame and how his privacy has been invaded since ‘Heartstopper’ became a huge success. Unfortunately, fans of the show were tempted to know more about the actors’ personal lives and he was not the exception.
During the interview, he confessed it was hard for him to come out in such a public way and that he would have preferred to do it differently. However, he does not regret it:
“I think ‘forced’ isn’t the right word I would use, but I would say that I would have preferred to do it another way. I also don’t know if I would have ever done it. But at the end of the day, I don’t regret it. In many ways, it was really empowering. It was just a very natural process for me; I didn’t really have an ‘oh, shit’ moment. It just became more and more evident.”
Despite this, Kit Connor mentioned he feels lucky for being part of ‘Heartstopper’ as the show has had a huge positive impact on thousands of teenagers around the world:
“As an actor, you’re not always so lucky to be able to do a project you feel actually has an impact on people. I feel super lucky to have been able to do it. The idea that you’re having an impact on anyone’s life, especially a stranger, it’s really special.”
The second season of ‘Heartstopper’ will premiere on Netflix on August 3 and fans are eagerly waiting to see how the story between Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring continues You can watch the trailer below:
