‘Elemental’ is Disney Pixar’s latest flop at the box office and, earlier this week, some of its writers revealed that the movie’s original story was completely changed by the studio. As a result, several people are now blaming these changes for the underwhelming reception and numbers of the film as its original plot was allegedly better structured and had an antagonist.
Since its premiere on June 16, ‘Elemental’ has been receiving a lot of hate on social media and the online community did not hesitate on expressing their opinion about the movie. According to several Twitter users, the film was predictable and boring because of the forceful inclusion of a non-binary character in the movie.
John Hoberg and Kat Likkel, writers for the movie, recently gave an interview to ‘The Direct’ and revealed that Wade’s mother was the original antagonist of ‘Elemental’ before the story was completely changed by the studio. In the original script, the water-element character was part of a powerful family that controlled the flow of water in Element City and wanted to build a canal through Firetown.
“Well, there was a version where Wade’s mother was an antagonist. And it was an early version. And it was almost like Chinatown where there was once where Wade’s mother was part of a powerful family that controlled the water flow, and they wanted to put water, like a canal, through fire town.”
However, several members working on the movie strongly opposed the idea of having a villain. According to them, they wanted ‘Elemental’ to be a movie about inclusion and love so including a villain was unnecessary. After this information was made public, fans of the studio started to wonder if a movie with the original plot would have been received better.
