Netflix made $900 million from ‘The Squid Game,’ but its creator was left with only a pittance

The Squid Game is one of the most successful series in the history of the streaming platform, Netflix, as it caused great controversy and a lot of audience attention. Netflix earned 900 million dollars with ‘The Squid Game’, but its creator was left with only a pittance.

We are just a short time away from the release of the second season of The Squid Game. The first season was so iconic that just the theme song of one of the games went around the world and generated a lot of inspirations in series, movies and music.

According to a recent report, it has been estimated that Netflix earned more than 900 million dollars with the overwhelming success of The Squid Game on its platform. However, what has raised controversy is the recent statement made by the creator, director and screenwriter of the series, Hwang Dong-hyuk, who said that he only got crumbs from that figure.

Time magazine listed Dong-hyuk as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. But the truth is that the South Korean creator, director and screenwriter did not receive more for the series than “to put food on the table”, as he unfortunately confessed in a recent interview he had with the British newspaper The Guardian.

However, the few profits he had have an explanation, and is that the Netflix contract is based on predefined salaries, where no bonuses or extras derived from the possible royalties generated by the story are added. That is, the creators of the story do not get any additional benefits from merchandising or intellectual property that may be generated in cases like this, of a great and unexpected international success.
