Disney recently parted ways with their Chief Diversity Officer, Latondra Newton, after having worked for the studio for six years. Earlier this week, Newton announced that she mutually agreed with the company to step down from her position and people were quick to point out that she must have been fired due to the complete failures of movies like ‘The Little Mermaid’, ‘Elemental’, and ‘Lightyear.’
Although Latondra Newtown made sure to mention that she decided to leave the studio and her job as the Chief Diversity Officer on her own terms, many people strongly believe that Disney fired her because she was not doing a good job and most of the movies she worked in were a complete box office failure for the company.
The decision was allegedly taken by the senior executives of the company after the movie division failed to reach the productivity goals with movies like ‘The Little Mermaid’ and ‘Elemental.’ Her departure from the company was communicated through an internal memo signed by Disney’s Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, Sonia Coleman.
During Latondra Newton’s time as the Chief Diversity Officer, Disney made several ‘inclusive’ changes not only in their movies but also in their amusement parks and began allowing things such as gender-neutral restrooms. Although she left the company on her own terms, several media outlets are speculating about the real reason behind her departure and citing Disney’s underwhelming numbers at the box office as the catalyst for this decision.
