‘Elemental’, Disney and Pixar’s latest movie, premiered on June 16, 2023, in the United States and in many other countries all around the world shortly after. Although both companies are well known for their memorable movies and stories, their latest movie is already considered a huge failure due to its underwhelming first-week numbers at the box office.
Just a few days after its premiere, it was already clear that ‘Elemental’ was going to have poor legs due to the lukewarm reception from both the general public and movie critics as this is always a good indicator of its performance at the box office. As a result, it did not even cross the $100 million mark in the United States during its first week and became one of the few movies from the studio that has failed to do so.
On top of that, it looks like things will not improve anytime soon as the overseas numbers are not good either. Eight days after its release, ‘Elemental’ was only able to gross $52,652,915 at the domestic box office (the United States and Canada), and even if this number seems low, it actually represents 76.8% of the total gross because the movie only grossed $15,925,506 internationally (23.2%) for a worldwide gross of $68,578,421.
In comparison to other Disney and Pixar movies, it is already clear that the movie will not be able to reach the productivity benchmarks of other projects of the studio such as Incredibles 2, Toy Story 3 and 4, Finding Nemo, and Finding Dory, all of which were met with critical acclaim and were a huge success at the box office.
After ‘Elemental’ failed to gain the attention of the masses, it is expected that Disney will start promoting the film more aggressively in a last attempt to avoid having another flop under their name after ‘Lightyear’ in 2022 and save the repudiation of the Pixar brand.
