‘Elemental’, Disney Pixar’s latest animated film, is a complete failure both at the domestic and the global box office. The movie, which opened on June 22, 2023, has become one of the company’s worst premieres to date which has led many people to believe that the reason behind the movie’s performance is the inclusion of a non-binary character in it.
Although the reviews and early predictions showed a lukewarm reception from the public, the actual numbers were a complete disappointment and paint a terrible picture for the film’s performance in the upcoming weeks as ‘Elemental’ only grossed $29.6 million on its first weekend.
After the numbers were posted, the online community was quick to discuss the reasons behind its failure. Some of them sided with the critics who had previously pointed out that the movie lacked creativity and innovation as Disney Pixar has released movies with similar plots in the past. On the other hand, others think that the inclusion of the studio’s first non-binary character in the movie might be the real reason for its performance.
According to some of the comments, ‘Elemental’ will suffer the same box office fate as ‘Lightyear’ and their failures can be attributed to the forced inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters. As both are considered children’s movies, some parents have openly refused to support any film that exposes their children to this kind of content.
