The live-action version of ‘The Little Mermaid’ continues to be surrounded by controversies. This time, Melissa McCarthy, who plays Ursula, is getting a lot of criticism due to her makeup in the film. As a result, the makeup artist in charge of the movie has come forward to talk about the offensive comments towards Ursula.
Peter Smith King, the makeup artist behind Ursula’s look, decided to address the backlash and the harsh criticism that McCarthy is currently receiving on social media. The common sentiment is that someone who identifies as queer should have handled her makeup since Ursula was inspired by drag queen Divine.
Earlier this week, Peter decided to give an interview to Insider to talk about the topic and revealed that he finds the comments ridiculous
“Why can’t I do as good a job as a queer makeup artist? That’s ridiculous. That’s trying to claim it and that’s fine if that’s what they wanna do, but don’t put people down because they’re not what they want it to be. We discussed everything. I mean, we both laughed about how much we love drag queens and drag makeup and stuff.”
‘The Little Mermaid’ has been the focus of several controversies since the movie was announced a few years ago, more specifically after it was reported that Ariel was going to be race-bended. This new controversy involving Melissa McCarthy could be the final nail in the coffin of the movie’s performance at the box office.
