BLACKPINK’s Jennie was the center of attention during her appearance at the Cannes Film Festival. She was there to promote HBO’s ‘The Idol’, the series in which she will make her acting debut. However, the first reviews about the show have been extremely negative and the South Korean artist is receiving a lot of backlash because of it.
Most of the reviews highlight that the first episodes of the show are full of sex, drugs, and explicit content. For example, David Fear from Rolling Stone described it as “Nasty, brutish, [feels] much longer than it is, and way, way worse than you’d have anticipated.” Although there are some positive reviews, the general consensus is that ‘The Idol’ is superficial, gross, and sexist.
As a result of this, Jennie’s fans are using social media to express their concerns as they cannot believe that she was willing to participate in a show this controversial and she is now receiving a lot of backlash because of it: “Jennie is on this? why”, “‘Is this the series Jennie is going to debut in?”, “What kind of storytelling is this, did they lose their minds?”
In addition, her fans fear that her participation in the series could negatively affect her public image. South Korea is still a very conservative country so it is highly like that she will also receive harsh critics from the South Korean media.
