Tina Turner sadly died this Wednesday, May 24, at the age of 83 at her home in Switzerland. According to a statement given by her representative, the artist passed away peacefully after a long illness at her mansion in Küsnacht, near Zurich.
The American singer had retired from the stage in 2013 and in 2016 she was diagnosed with intestinal cancer and even underwent a kidney transplant in 2017. Turner was one of the most influential artists in rock history, as well as having suffered a complicated youth.
The star paved the way in the big leagues for female rock singers with a style inherited from gospel, soul and budding rock. Tina Turner was born as Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939 and grew up in Nutbush, Tennessee.
The singer was famous for the energy she exuded on stage and her husky, powerful voice. She won numerous awards recognizing her artistic work, including 8 Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2021 as a solo artist, having first been inducted with Ike in 1991 as a duo.
In a 2018 interview, Turner said, “People think my life has been hard, but I think it’s been a wonderful journey. The older you get, the more you realize it’s not what happens to you, it’s how you deal with it.”
