In the new film Jeanne du Barry, in which he played King Louis XV, American actor Johnny Depp has made a comeback to the big screen and red carpets.
Even though he received a lot of cheers when he walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in France, several elements of his comeback have drawn harsh criticism. His physical appearance, particularly his decayed teeth, was the first thing that fans who were there discussed. On the other hand, it has led to harsh opinions from professionals who attended the premiere of the movie that depicts his fresh beginning.
The 59-year-old actor played King Louis XV, speaking French and donning somewhat archaic attire. He was criticized for his poor command of French, but it was also stated that his comeback has been “a real disappointment”.
Film critic Robbie Collin told the Daily Telegraph “True, his French isn’t bad, but his real seriousness is non-existent, and he only feels at home in the role during occasional bouts of clowning around, which hardly helps sell his role as an actor.” Likewise critic Jordan Mintzer expressed that Johnny Depp “delivers some early thrills and then mostly yawns, with Depp delivering what seems like a total of a dozen lines in respectable French while remaining mute.”
What is actually true is that his most recent appearance on the big screen did not receive positive reviews because it did not seem like Johnny Depp was doing a good job for his return to acting, which had been put on hold for a while due to legal disputes with his ex-wife Amber Heard.
