Prince William never accepted Meghan Markle as his brother Prince Harry‘s wife, and reports suggest that he had several reasons for refusing to recognize her as a member of the royal family.
The British monarchy is one of the few still remaining in the world, and it’s also the most important and recognized one around the globe. Therefore, any marriage within the monarchy is very important, as it can signify an improvement in relations with other states or send a message of unity to the public.
With this in mind, Prince William chose his wife, Kate Middleton, who will be the consort queen when King Charles III finally abdicates the throne. Kate has the abilities and charisma to be the image of an entire kingdom to the world. It also appears that William did not agree with the woman his younger brother chose to be his wife.
Prince Harry met Meghan Markle in 2016 when she was still an actress living in the United States, while he was living in London. They connected through a mutual friend and fell in love on their first date. Two years later, in 2017, they announced their marriage with the help of Harry’s father, King Charles III.
According to Robert Lacey, an important historian of the British Crown, Prince William did not like the idea of having Meghan in the royal family and, in fact, tried to persuade Harry not to marry her and to look for a better proposal. Harry, of course, ignored his older brother’s warnings and married Meghan, much to his brother’s displeasure.
This episode allegedly marked the beginning of the media feud between the two couples, William and Kate against Harry and Meghan. Supposedly, William’s reasons for not accepting Meghan were that Meghan was raised differently, as an American, and the royal lifestyle was not suitable for her.
